IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM AT HOME PET DOCTOR
After 40 years devoted to caring for dogs and cats, I am retiring from active veterinary practice.
For 26 years, I made house calls throughout Bernalillo County, serving the good people of Albuquerque, NM. For the past 14 years, I have had the pleasure of caring for pets in Chaffee, Lake, and Park counties, offering house calls as well as in-office appointments in Buena Vista, CO.
Retirement is truly bittersweet. I will deeply miss the wonderful pet owners I've met over the years-and their beloved pets. When I graduated from CSU 40 years ago, I promised myself that I would focus my practice on general care and on reaching people and pets who, for whatever reason, couldn't access veterinary care in the traditional way. I worked to keep care simple, convenient, and accessible to everyone. I'm grateful for the many memories and friendships I've made along the way. I have been truly blessed!
Veterinary professionals are deeply dedicated to their work. Many of us love what we do and can't imagine doing anything else. But the work takes a toll-physically, emotionally and mentally. As I begin retirement, I'll be undergoing major surgery in hopes of correcting a severe spinal cord stricture in my neck. The problem began after a serious injury to my right shoulder in 2017, but a busy practice kept me from addressing it properly. I kept telling myself, "I'll get to it eventually". That time is now.
My final day with be November 20, 2026 and I will be accepting only minor medical and vaccination appointment updates on CURRENT PATIENTS ONLY. I am no longer accepting new clients after October 31, 2026.

At Home Pet Doctor is a comprehensive outpatient pet care option for dogs and cats that offers a hybrid between in-office visits and mobile veterinary services. Based in Buena Vista, Colorado, Dr. Richard Gastellum is a compassionate and experienced veterinarian providing high quality, in-office veterinary appointments, as well as options for house calls to those who desire.

Our conveniently-located in-office location provides the best of both worlds with appointments in our fully equipped mobile clinic in an environmentally-controlled RV garage. Home office visits offer us plentiful access to full power for heating, cooling, lighting, and anything else we might need for your pets while in our care. We prefer to do all surgeries inside this home base to ensure a temperature-controlled space to keep your pets safe under anesthesia. This is especially important during the cold winter months as guarding against hypothermia while under general anesthesia is our primary concern. Please schedule an in-office appointment here. With our fully functional mobile pet care clinic, Dr. Gastellum brings services typically found at a traditional pet clinic straight to your doorstep.
Although we come to you, we are not “house call” veterinarians only capable of basic examinations and end-of-life care. Our state-of-the-art mobile pet clinic is a fully sanitized, properly air-conditioned environment for examination, diagnostics, treatment, dentistry, and surgery. While on the road, the mobile clinic gets its power from a generator to provide the same comprehensive services found at our home base.
We service the greater Collegiate Peaks area and charge a separate mobile fee based on the distance from our home base in Buena Vista to yours. Please reach out to us for a personal quotation of anticipated fees.

Inside The Mobile Clinic
The mobile clinic is 26 feet in length and is equipped with 4-wheel drive to handle Colorado's winters. The state-of-the-art mobile clinic features the following equipment:
- Central heating and air conditioning
- High ceiling with LED lighting
- Non-slip floor
- Two hydraulic lift tables
- Walk-on scale
- Top-of-the-line dental equipment
- Digital X-ray (dental and general)
- Isoflurane gas anesthesia
- EKG machine
- Cold laser therapy unit
- Lab equipment (such as centrifuges)
- Refrigerator, freezer, and microwave
- Onboard pharmacy
- Central vacuum
- Thermal imaging scanner
- Large kennel (divides into 2 small)
The separate surgical suite is complete with it's own oxygen generator, high intensity surgical light, a surgical heating bed, and pre-sterilized surgical packs. There is even a private bathroom!
